The Blind Mothers' Union
The Blind Mother’s Union was organized in 2002 by Nigisti Amare, a blind teacher and now dear friend. She realized the need for the blind mothers of Mekele to form a union in order to access information that might improve their lives. Homeless and destitute, these mothers care for their sighted children in desperate circumstances. Before we were introduced to the blind mothers and their beautiful children, education was out of their reach. At $10.00 per student/per year, it simply isn’t possible for these women. Since 2007, we have been able to send over 50 children to school annually. When we meet with the union each time we go, we are delighted to learn that, in many cases, these students are now top of the class!
